Did I satisfy you?

“You mean you are not pretending when you do your fortune telling? You actually see the scenes in your crystal ball and draw them?”

She nodded her head.

“You did not know that this was Warwick Abbey?”

She shook her head.

“And you did not know that this is the Noble Pond?” He thrust the pond picture at her.

She shook her head again.

“Did you know who the man is?”

She shook her head.

“Then why did you draw the heart-shaped birthmark?”

“I saw the man like this, with the heart-shaped birthmark.”

“And you know I have such a birthmark.”

“I found out only when I saw you in the fencing room in Madley Lodge. That was why I ran away.”

“And the woman?”
 
She hesitated.

“Tell me!”

“It could be women, you could be a rake making love in the most shocking ways with many women. I did not see their faces…”

“Except?”

“Except… the one by the pond.”

“The one at Noble Pond. The one with the H and D tattooed on her ankle! It was you, was it not? You saw yourself making love with me by the Noble Pond in Warwick Abbey.” He stopped pacing and then kneeled before her. He raised his hands and placed his fingers on her creamy flesh near her décolletage. Claire sucked her breath in and started panting. She tried to avoid his hands by pressing herself further into the settee, but he kept coming nearer.

“Was I … a good lover? Did I… satisfy you?” he whispered.
