I watched the ABC At the Movie show and David and Margaret gave 4 stars for the Chinese movie Detective Dee and the Phantom Flame.
I hope to watch it too. The director, Tsui Hark, is one of the best from Hong Kong. I think his work is much better than John Woo, not sure why western studios like Woo's movies so much.
Hark's visual effect and imagination was way beyond Woo's movies and Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger. I was quite blown away by Hark's first kung fu creation many years ago.
I went to watch Detective Dee last week. The CGI and kung fu were great. But I think Hark can add more subplots. I didn't guess the mastermind right still. It was quite enjoyable. I will give it 3.5 stars.
Will you watch foreign language movies?

I will watch and have watched foreign movies, but I need subtitles since I only speak English and a smidgen of Spanish.
ReplyDeleteI will watch them if they are sub-titled with large enough lettering so I don't have to wear my reading glasses, lol.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check it out on NetFlix. I like Oriental foreign films - always so visual!
ReplyDeleteI love foreign films! My husband is partial to Kurosawa and Bergman. My oldest grandson is partial to Anime. I love anything good, no matter what nationality. I prefer subtitles to dubs, because I like hearing the other languages and I like hearing the actors' real voices.
ReplyDeleteAnother of my grandsons got addicted to Bergman's version of Mozart's opera THE MAGIC FLUTE when he (my grandson, not Bergman or Mozart) was too young to read the subtitles, and he used to go around singing in Swedish. lol!
And I totally LOVE Judge Dee, although Detective Dee doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the source material. Still, it looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for the head's up on it.

I do, but I tend to watch German or French films - languages where I have a tiny chance of following the dialogue without fixating on the subtitles.
ReplyDeleteoh yes, I want large print for subtitle too. Alex, it's a good movie. Have a go.
ReplyDeleteMarian and KK, I would watch any language, as long as the movie is good. Marian, what's this Judge Dee, do you mean Judge John Dee, the British drama?
ReplyDeleteJudge Dee was an actual judge in China. Here is the Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_Dee . Some of his cases were collected and published. :)

Oh, I know who you mean.
