Responding to readers' comments

I post my stories in forums and some readers post comments. I always have problem answering to readers' comments.

A simple thank you for 20 comments in a row seem boring. Asking the readers further questions about the story? Taking what they said and expand on them? Agreeing with them? Asking them personal question?

There are a few writers in our forums who are very good in answering comments. They tend to say some humorous and outrageous things and readers will go back to comment on the writers' comments.

Hmm, how to do that? Be funny or outrageous?

  1. I like to look at comments as possible sources for ideas for my writing. You never know what someone is going to say or what it's going to trigger in your mind.

  2. I always read the comments, but I usually don't have much of a response. If I had something witty to say, that would be great.

  3. I will respond in groups, and sometimes I don't bother if there's really no response to be made. If someone simply comments, "Congrats!" then I usually cover that in a group "Thanks everyone!"
