What if Darcy and Elizabeth met as youngsters?

“I assume there is not a dead husband in the grave either.” Mr. Darcy said to Elizabeth.

I nodded. The maid nearly burst out laughing.

He gazed at me sternly. “That is not a good thing to bare false testimony about.”

“I really want to help uncle and aunt!”

“How old are you?”

I bit my lips. “Did I not say that it is impolite to ask about a lady’s age? What is your age?”

He folded his arms across his chest. “It is more impolite to convey an untruth. I am four and twenty.”

“I am sixteen.”

“So young?” he commented.

“Do you mean I look much older?” My eyes flared with temper. The clothes might be old and worn, but I could not be that unattractive. “I think you are much older!”
