Quotes from Oscar Wilde

I was reading a book about ageing and the author liked to quote Oscar Wilde. It piqued my interest to read some of his works which I haven't read before.

Here are a few interesting quotes from The Importance of Being Earnest, about love, romance and other things.

The very essence of romance is uncertainty.

Divorces are made in Heaven.

Girls never marry to the men they flirt with.

Once a week is quite enough to dine with one's own relations.

In married life, three is company and two is none.

A man who decides to get married should know everything or nothing.

Do you like Wilde? What's your favourite quotes?

  1. Yes, I do like Oscar Wilde. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a great book, and there is a really cool short story called The Ghost of Canterville or something like that.

And just like Dorian, I have given my soul to the Devil ... muhahaha ... isn't that scary?

  2. I haven't read Wilde since college, but I agree with Cold As Heaven - I do like The Picture of Dorian Gray. Unlike Cold, I have not given my soul to the Devil. I tried to, but he just shivered.

  3. I do like Wilde, but I'm not sure what the best quote is...Probably "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much."

  4. Interesting that the essence of romance is uncertainty. Maybe that's the essence of a successful romance novel. What do you think?
